Women's Basketball Advances to NAC Championship Game

Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – February 28, 2014 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team advanced to its third straight North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Championship game with a 67-61 overtime victory over Maine Maritime in Friday night's NAC semifinal contest at Glenbrook Gymnasium.

With the Chargers trailing 48-44 with 43 seconds remaining in regulation, a Maine Maritime player was called for a flagrant foul giving Colby-Sawyer two free throws and possession. Junior Kelsey Cahill (Cumberland, R.I.) knocked down both tries. On the ensuing play, sophomore Katie McCarthy (Mansfield, Mass.) was fouled and hit both free throws to knot the game at 48-48. The Mariners could not convert on their last possession to send the game to overtime.

Junior Kelsey Bragdon (Wells, Maine) opened the extra session with a layup to give Colby-Sawyer a two-point edge. A pair of free throws by Ashley Shine (Springfield, Mo.) pulled the Mariners even at 50-50. Two minutes later, Bragdon struck again from beyond the arc to give the Chargers a 54-52 lead. A layup by junior Rebekah Campbell (Corinth, Maine) cut the Maine Maritime deficit to 59-58 with 1:01 on the clock. Colby-Sawyer then scored the next six points to put the game away with six seconds left. The Chargers hit eight straight free throws to end the game and went 9-10 in the extra session.

The teams opened play by exchanging the first four baskets in the first five minutes of action. A three-pointer from Cheyenne Malloy (Norridgewock, Maine) gave Maine Maritime a 7-4 lead at the 12:30 mark. Colby-Sawyer then rattled off 14 straight points capped by a Kelsey Bragdon (Wells, Maine) trey. Over the next five minutes, the Mariners clawed back into the game with a 9-4 spurt with baskets from four different players. The Chargers received the next three points of the contest from senior Ashley Fruzzetti (Carver, Mass.), but Mariners closed the half with five points to trail 25-21 at the break.

Fruzzetti led all players with 18 points and a career-high eight rebounds. Bragdon poured in 17 points, including four three-pointers. Kelsey Cahill added 10 points and moved into 10th place in career rebounds with 664 after recording nine tonight.

Ashley Shine led the Mainers with 17 points. Campbell just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Leah Jackson added six points, six assists and a game best 14 rebounds.
