Women's Basketball Pushes Winning Streak to Five with 65-55 Win over Maine Maritime

Box Score NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 7, 2014 – Junior Kelsey Cahill (Cumberland, R.I.) scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season, to help lift the Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team to a 65-55 victory over Maine Maritime in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action Friday evening.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 11-9 overall and 10-3 in the NAC. The Chargers will host Husson on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Maine Maritime falls to 11-9 overall and 8-5 in conference play. The Mariners will travel to New England College for a 1:00 p.m. tip tomorrow. 

The home team used seven first half three pointers to secure a 15 point edge at the break. Senior Ashley Fruzzetti (Carver, Mass.) was 5-6 from beyond the arc as the Chargers shot 50 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes. After a Fruzzetti trey gave Colby-Sawyer a 16-11 lead with 12:19 on the clock, the Mariners received five straight points from sophomore Ashley Shine (Springfield, Mo.) to knot the game at 16-16. The Chargers then went on a 16-1 run capped by another Fruzzetti three to take its largest advantage of the first half at 32-17. Colby-Sawyer took a 38-23 lead into halftime.

Colby-Sawyer held a double figure lead for the first 14 minutes of the second half until senior Leah Jackson (Dedham, Maine) cut the Maine Maritime deficit to nine at 58-49 with 5:32 to play. Nine points would be as close as the visitors would come as Colby-Sawyer connected on a pair of lay-ins before a pair of free throws by Maine Maritime junior Jillian Perron (Skowhegan, Maine) made the final score 65-55 Colby-Sawyer.

Fruzzetti scored a game-high 18 points on 6-10 shooting from beyond the arc to lead the Chargers. Cahill was 6-10 from the floor for 17 points and added a game best 12 boards. She also had three blocks. Freshman Kristin Ellis (South Easton, Mass.) contributed 11 points and three steals in 25 minutes off the bench.

Maine Maritime received 12 points apiece from Leah Jackson and Ashley Shine. Freshman Kristi Willey (Topsham, Maine) contributed nine points and six caroms in 20 minutes of action.

The Mariners used 13 offensive rebounds to outscore the Chargers 16-4 in second chance points. Colby-Sawyer finished the game 46.9 percent from the floor and 45.5 percent from beyond the arc.
