Tufts' Maggie Russell and Regis' Madi Zancan Receive NEWBA Week 9 Awards

Despite playing just one game last week, Russell put up award-winning numbers. She scored 33 points with 15 rebounds as Tufts went to overtime for an 84-75 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) victory over Bates College on Saturday at Cousens Gymnasium.

Freshman • Forward • Cumberland, RI

Zancan scored a season-high 27 points on 11-for-17 field goal shooting to go along with 10 rebounds, including seven offensive boards, and three blocked shots at Lasell last Tuesday. On Thursday at USJ, Zancan scored 20 points to help the Pride move into second place in the GNAC South Division. Saturday at Elms, she went 11-for-14 from the field, to finish with 22 points, seven rebounds, four assists, four steals, and four blocked shots. For the week, Zancan averaged 23.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals, and 3.0 blocks per game while shooting 66.7 percent (30-for-45) from the floor.

NEWBA First Team
  • Megan Bauman, Babson (Sr. | Guard | East Lyme, CT) - Bauman averaged 13.3 points and 5.3 assists as No. 11/11 Babson extended its winning streak to eight with three home victories. She scored 11 of her team-high 17 points in the fourth quarter and added seven assists in a 71-64 come-from-behind win over Hamilton on Monday. Bauman then scored 13 points and became the 18th player to surpass 1,000 points in Wednesday's 70-42 win over Clark and wrapped up the week with 10 points and five assists in a 66-50 victory over Coast Guard.
  • Izabelle Booth, Rhode Island College (Sr. | Forward | Newport, RI) - Booth averaged 15.0 ppg, 9.5 rpg, 2.5 apg and 1.0 bpg in a 2-0 week for the Anchorwomen. She had 15 points, 10 boards, three assists and a steal in a 77-61 win over UMass Dartmouth on Jan. 18. Booth had 15 points, nine rebounds, two assists and a pair of blocks in a 63-52 win vs. Castleton on Jan. 21.
  • Kylie Grassi, Bridgewater St. (So. | Forward | Plymouth, MA) - Averaged 19.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, three assists and 4.5 steals in a perfect 2-0 MASCAC week for the Bears while shooting 48.1% (13-27) from the floor and 84.6% (11-13) at the free throw line. Notched 21 points, five rebounds, three assists, four steals and a blocked shot in a 76-59 victory over Westfield State, and 18 points, eight rebounds, three assists and five steals in a 91-58 win on the road over Fitchburg State.
  • Kamsi Nwogu, MIT (So. | Forward | Algonquin, IL) - In a 3-0 week for MIT, Kamsi Nwogu averaged 15.5 points, 10 rebounds, and a 52.8 shooting percentage. Last Tuesday, she posted 15 points and three rebounds in 25 minutes of a 65-52 victory at Colby. The following night, Nwogu generated a game-high 17 points and a career-high 15 rebounds to help MIT overcome a 17-point deficit to defeat Coast Guard, 70-66. On Saturday, she produced 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds in a 67-49 win over Wheaton.
  • Dede Stevenson, Mitchell (Sr. | Guard | Hartford, CT) - Stevenson posted 19 points, five boards and three steals in a 71-50 win over New England College.

NEWBA Second Team

  • Jalen Cook, Plymouth St. (Sr | Guard | Monkton, VT) - Senior Jalen Cook (Monkton, Vt.) averaged 20.0 points and 9.0 rebounds as the Panthers split a pair of games last week, hitting 13-of-25 from the floor and 4-of-8 from beyond the arc to go with 10-of-13 from the free throw line. She went 4-of-7, including 1-for-1 from distance, and sank all three free throw attempts in a 12-point, 13-rebound double-double as PSU topped NVU-Lyndon, 65-47, on Tuesday night, adding five assists and a pair of steals to her stat line. In Saturday?s setback at WestConn the forward set a career-high with 28 points on 9-of-18 shooting, drilling 3-of-7 from deep and 7-of-10 from the line, to go with five rebounds, four steals, one assist and a block.
  • Amanda DeAngelis, Suffolk (Jr. | Forward | Londonderry, NH) - DeAngelis averaged 19.0 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals in games againsts University of New England and Endicott. Against UNE, she finished with 27 points, five boards and three steals.
  • Angelica Hurley, St. Joseph's Maine (Sr. | Guard | Hartford, CT) - While averaging just 25 minutes per game in a pair of GNAC wins, Hurley contributed 14.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists while shooting 52.9% (9-17) from the field, 45.5% (5-11) from downtown, and 75% (6-8) from the FT line in important GNAC wins over Emmanuel and Johnson & Wales last week. The junior guard scored 16 points with six boards, four assists, and two steals in an 83-67 triumph over Emmanuel on Tuesday.
  • Morgan Morrison, Smith (Sr. | Forward | Detroit, MI) - Morrison averaged 18.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game in a 2-0 week for the fifth-ranked Smith basketball team. In an overtime win at WPI, Morrison finished with 13 points and eight boards followed by 23 points and 11 boards in Smith's victory at Clark. Morrison has seven double-double on the year and leads the NEWMAC in points per game and rebounds per game.
  • Faye Veilleux, UNE (Jr. | Forward | Wrentham, MA) - In a 2-0 week for the Nor'Easters, Veilleux averaged 16.5 points and 5.0 rebounds. She hit the go-ahead FT with 7.7 left in OT against WNEU and made 4-of-5 3-pointers against Suffolk to help overcome a 21-point, 2nd-quarter deficit.
