Sugars & Donovan Earn NEWBA's First Weekly Awards of 2019-20 Campaign

Sugars, the GNAC Co-Player of the Week, led the Chargers to a 3-0 week with 21.7 points and 12.7 rebounds per game. She recorded a double-double in all three games, while shooting 46.9% (23-49) from the floor and 90.5% (19-21) from the free throw line. Sugars began the season with a game-best 24 points to go with 10 rebounds in just 22 minutes of action in an 85-33 win over Dean College. The senior followed with 13 points and 10 rebounds in a 68-45 win over Fitchburg State in the first game of the Colby-Sawyer Tip-Off Tournament. Sugars saved her best for last as she posted game-highs of 28 points and 18 rebounds in a 63-58 win over Saint Lawrence to guide the Chargers to the Tip-Off Tournament championship. She was 10-for-10 from the free throw line and was named Tournament MVP. At the end of the first half, she became the 15th player in program history to reach 1000 career points.


Bailey Donovan
Husson
Freshman • Center • Island Falls, Maine

Donovan tipped off her collegiate career on a high note, becoming Husson's first rookie center to open her career with back-to-back double-doubles. The freshman averaged 18.5 points on 73.9% (17-23) shooting from the field and 12.0 rebounds per game to help Husson split the weekend at the 36th Annual Emmanuel College Tip-Off Tournament. Donovan was the lone Eagle to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team at Emmanuel this past weekend while achieving a total of 37 points, 24 rebounds, and eight blocks. In her first collegiate contest, Donovan scored 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting and secured 13 rebounds while blocking five shots in a 69-59 loss to St. John Fisher. Donovan followed that up with another strong performance as she recorded 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting, 11 rebounds and three blocks as the Eagles defeated St. Joseph's (Brooklyn), 88-70.

  • Abby Cavallaro, University of New England (So. | Guard | South Portland, Maine) - Cavallaro led the Nor'easters to a 3-0 start to the season while averaging 16.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game. She opened the season with 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals in a 68-53 triumph over Regis. Cavallaro then totaled 24 points on 71.4% shooting to go with seven boards, three steals and two assists in a 71-65 win over Southern Maine. In her most recent contest, Cavallaro scored 12 points while also adding five rebounds, five assists and six steals in a 66-62 victory over Becker. Over the three-game stretch, the sophomore shot 46.7% from the floor, including 40.9% from three-point distance.
  • Peace Kabari, Trinity (Sr. | Guard | Manchester, N.H.) - Kabari averaged 16.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.5 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game in the Trinity Tip-Off Tournament. She scored 17 points with eight rebounds in a 77-67 loss to Eastern Connecticut and 16 points with 11 boards, five assists, three steals, and two blocks in a 74-52 win over Montclair State. Kabari shot 50 percent from the field and from three-point range, and 90 percent from the foul line. She represented Trinity on the All-Tournament team.
  • Jackie Luckhardt, Southern Maine (Sr. | Guard | Londonderry, N.H.) - Luckhardt filled the stat sheet leading USM to a 3-1 start to its season, including a pair of road wins. Averaging 13.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 6.8 steals per game with a 3.6 assist-to-turnover ratio, the Huskies' guard shot 45.5 percent from the field, 50.0 percent from three-point range and 79.2 percent from the free throw line. Scoring in double-figures in three of the four games, Luckhardt matched her career-best with 19 points in a 66-54 win vs. Thomas in just 22 minutes of playing time, shooting 7-for-10 from the field. In a 79-50 win vs. Maine-Farmington, Luckhardt had a career-high 10 steals as her team had 21 in the contest. Luckhardt's 10 steals are third most for USM in a single game in program history.
  • Elise Magro, Castleton (Fr. | Guard | Rutland, Vt.) - Magro has had a stellar start to her collegiate career, winning Little East Conference Rookie of the Week accolades in each of the season's first two weeks while averaging 17.3 points per game on 48.9 percent shooting. In addition to her scoring marks, Magro has contributed in all facets of the game with 5.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.7 blocks in 31.0 minutes per game. In the season-opener against Norwich, Magro led the Spartans (3-0) to victory with 17 points, four rebounds and three assists in her debut. She followed that up with her first career double-double in a win over Maine-Farmington, notching 15 points and 10 boards in addition to four blocks and three assists. She capped the week with a 20-point outing in a win over Thomas, shooting 10-of-18 from the field and adding a pair of assists and three steals. She currently ranks third in the LEC in overall scoring average and fifth in field goal percentage among players with 20 or more field goal attempts.
  • Katelyn Pickunka, Smith (So. | Forward | Westhampton, Mass.) - In a 3-0 week for Smith, Pickunka averaged 22.7 points and 6.0 rebounds while shooting 70.3 percent from the floor and 84.2 percent from the free throw line. In an 84-43 season-opening win at Salve Regina, she scored a career-high 24 points with six rebounds, one block and one steal on 9-of-11 shooting from the floor. In Smith's home opener on Saturday, Pickunka shot a perfect 8-of-8 from the floor and 5-of-5 from the free throw line to finish with 21 points and three boards. She capped the week with a 23-point and nine-rebound effort to help the Pioneers capture the 27th Annual Tyler Tip-Off Tournament with a 79-71 win over Moravian. For her efforts, Pickunka was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. She finishes the week ranked second in the NEWMAC in points per game and field goal percentage.
