NEWBA Announces Weekly Awards for January 8

Junior guard Kenzie Worcester of Husson University is the Presto Sports NEWBA Player of the Week for games played from January 2-7. Worcester averaged 29 points per game on 50 percent (14-of-28) shooting from the field and 85.7 percent (30-of-35) from the free throw line in a 2-0 week for the Eagles. Worcester also contributed 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game. In Wednesday's 76-63 victory over Southern Maine, she scored 22 points to go with five assists, five boards and three steals. Worcester followed that up with 36 points, six rebounds, two assists and one block in a 69-61 triumph at Maine Maritime on Saturday. Against the Mariners, Worcester surpassed the 1,000-point milestone for her career and set a single-game program record for free throws made with 20.

Newbury College
Freshman • Forward • West Haven, Conn.

Freshman forward Jaymesha Sanders of Newbury College earns NEWBA Rookie of the Week honors after averaging 20.5 points, 14.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in a 2-0 week for the Nighthawks. Sanders opened her week with 24 points, including 20 in the first half, and 16 boards in a 79-71 win at Pine Manor on Wednesday. Against Elms on Saturday, the freshman totaled 17 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block in a 79-40 victory for Newbury. For the week, Sanders shot 58.3 percent (14-of-24) from the field, including 60 percent (3-of-5) from beyond the arc, and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the free throw line.

  • Britt Herring, Worcester State (Junior • Center • West Brookfield, Mass.) - Herring posted a pair of double-double efforts in a 1-1 week for Worcester State, as she scored 16 points and grabbed ten rebounds in a win over Keene State, before producing 17 points and 11 boards in a loss to Salem State. Herring also contributed three blocks and two assists in each contest. 
  • Kelsi McNamara, Saint Joseph's (Maine) (Junior • Guard • West Newbury, Mass.) - McNamara averaged 22.5 points, 5.0 assists, 2.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game in a 2-0 week for the Monks. She netted 28 points with the help of an 11-for-11 free throw shooting performance in a victory over Bates College on Tuesday, and tallied 17 points and eight assists in a win over Norwich on Saturday.
  • Savannah Olsen, Newbury (Junior • Forward • Battle Creek, Michigan) - Olsen averaged 21 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks per game in a 2-0 week for the Nighthawks. She recorded 19 points, three rebounds, two blocks and one steal at Pine Manor, before tallying 23 points, four boards, two assists and two steals against Elms. 
  • Lauren Petit, Bowdoin (Senior • Guard • Medfield, Mass.) - Petit led the Polar Bears in scoring in a pair of NESCAC wins last weekend, including a game-high 20 points and seven rebounds in a victory over No. 2 Tufts on Saturday. For the weekend, she averaged 16.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and connected on 58.3% of her shots from the field.
  • Mya Villard, Eastern Connecticut (Sophomore • Forward • Cromwell, Conn.) - Villard turned in a pair of impressive offensive performances for the Warriors last week, as she scored 30 points at Johnson & Wales and 25 at UMass Boston while shooting 53.7 percent from the field over the two contests. Villard also averaged eight rebounds per game with seven against the Wildcats and nine against the Beacons.
