NEWBA Announces Awards for January 5

Molly Brown of Bates College is the NEWBA/Prestosports Player of the Week for January 5. Brown scored a career-high 31 points, including 18 in the second half, to lead Bates to a 76-72 win over nationally ranked University of New England on Saturday. Brown was a perfect 4-for-4 from behind the arc over the final 5:05, as Bates came from behind to upset the Nor'easters. On Dec. 31 in Bates' 80-57 win over Clark University, Brown matched her previous career high with 27 points. A day earlier she led Bates with 19 points in a loss to MIT. Bates gone 2-1 since Dec. 8, with Brown averaging 25.7 points on 41.7% shooting, including 50% (13-26) behind the arc. She has also grabbed 6.3 rebounds with 2.7 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocks per game.

Mariah Nicholas

Freshman • Forward • Acushnet, Mass.

In two games over the holiday period, Nicholas averaged 14.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game in a pair of wins for the Hawks.  Nicholas' highlight game was a 23 point performance against Wheaton College, where she shot 11-for-15 from the field in 31 minutes of action.

• Mackenzie Griffin, Trinity College (CT) (Jr., C, Stamford, Conn.) - In Trinity's first game back in the New Year, Griffin was outstanding, scoring 26 points with seven boards and three steals in the Bantams' 58-54 win over Ramapo.  Griffin was 10-for-13 from the floor and connected on six of nine free throws, accounting for 45% of Trinity's points in the game.
• Aliah Curry, Norwich University (Sr., G, Windsor, Mass.) - Curry carried Norwich University pick up its eighth straight win of the year after the Cadets defeated in-state foe Castleton State 69-61 to open 2015. Curry nailed 47.4 percent (9-for-19) from the field and added 12 points from beyond the arc (4-for-8) and six points from the stripe (6-for-9) as she led the squad with 28 points. Curry also picked up three assists and a rebound. 
• Carylanne Wolfington, Colby College (Jr., G, Hallowell, Maine) - Wolfington averaged 18.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals, had two assists and no turnovers in a 2-1 week for the Mules. She also shot nearly 49 percent from the field and made all seven of her free throws. Wolfington had 16 of her game-high 25 points in the second half in a tough two-point loss to Coast Guard in Florida. Wolfington leads the Mules in scoring (16.4), rebounding (5.4), free throw percentage (.905), and is second in field goal percentage (.477). 
• Caroline Brasa, Western Connecticut State University (Sr., G, East Hartford, Conn.) - Brasa was named MVP of the Hat City Classic with a pair of double-doubles last week.  The senior had 20 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocked shots against Green Mountain, then added 12 points, 14 rebounds, two steals, and two more blocks as the Colonials beat Farmingdale State.
• Amber Legare, Mount Holyoke College (Sr., F, Chicopee, Mass.) - Legare helped the Lyons to a 1-1 week by averaging 20 points and eight rebounds.  First, she helped MHC end a six game losing streak by hitting the game winning jumper with one second to go against MCLA, finishing with 20 points and adding in 11 rebounds, then scored 20 points against Wheaton College.
