Cook, Woods Highlight NEWBA Award Winners For Jan. 27

Cook led the Ephs to a pair of wins last week to capture the NEWBA/Prestosports Player of the Week award for January 27.  Playing all 40 minutes against longtime rival Amherst College, Cook pouring in 26 points, 12 rebounds, three steals, and two blocks in a 65-63 win.  She followed that up with an 18 point, six rebounds, and five steals in a 66-49 victory over Hamilton College.  For the week, Cook shot 58.6% from the field (17-for-29).

Michelle Woods earns the Rookie of the Week honors for January 27.  In two games, the freshman averaged a double-double of 27.5 points and 12.0 rebounds to go with 2.0 assists, 3.0 steals per game and a blocked shot, while shooting 46.3% (19-41) from the floor and 94.4% (17-18) from the free throw line. The five-foot, eight-inch center posted a double-double with a career-high matching 28 points to go with 16 rebounds, two assists, three steals and a blocked shot in Wheelock's 81-58 victory over Lesley University on January 23. The rookie capped the week with 27 points, eight rebounds, two assists and three steals and was a perfect 11-11 from the free throw line vs. Elms College on January 25. Woods is averaging 26.5 points and 11.3 rebounds over her last four contests.

  • Aliah Curry, Norwich University (Jr., G, Windsor, Mass.) -  Curry averaged 25 points per game in a 2-1 week for the Cadets. She totaled a week-high of 32 points in Norwich's 72-65 win against in-state rival Middlebury before adding a 24-point performance against Saint Joseph's (ME). She also netted 19 points against Mount Ida on Monday. Curry shot an impressive 44.8 percent (26-58) from the floor and hit 11-28 (39.3 percent) from three-point range. The junior guard also added nine rebounds, 12 assists, and eight steals on the week. 
  • Megan Pelletier, University of Southern Maine (So., F, Winslow, Maine) - Pelletier had back-to-back season-best performances to help USM to a 2-0 week in Little East Conference play. In a 68-31 win over Plymouth State, Pelletier was 6-for-7 from the field in 18 minutes to score a then season-best 18 points, adding six rebounds, three steals and an assist. In a 57-55 win road win at Western Connecticut, Pelletier had game and season-high totals of 22 points and 10 rebounds. Pelletier 10-for-16 from the field recording her first double-double of the season. 
  • Forbasaw Nkamebo, Westfield State University (So., F, Amherst, Mass.) - Normally a reserve forward, Nkamebo started in place of injured star Gabby Felix and led Westfield State to a 2-0 week. She poured in career high 31 points along with game high 13 rebounds in a 69-62 victory over Worcester State, and had game highs of 16 points and 11 rebounds in a 79-64 victory over MCLA.
  • Alyssa Leonard, Castleton State College (Sr., G, Amherst, Mass.) - Leonard was Castleton’s most consistent player during its 3-0 week, averaging 14.7 points, 9.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.0 steal per game while shooting over 50 percent from the field in every game. Leonard’s most impressive performance came against Maine Farmington, as she was just an assist shy of a triple double with 14 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists while committing just one turnover in 27 minutes of action. She finished her week off with 17 points, nine rebounds and three assists against Thomas as the Spartans improved to 15-2 and 10-0 in the NAC.
  • Jordyn Nappi, Eastern Connecticut State University (Fr., G, Southington, Conn.) - In a split of two Little East Conference games last week, Nappi led both teams in scoring in both games, recording identical 22-point games. Nappi shot 53 percent overall from the field and from three-point range (7-of-13) and commited only two turnovers in 72 minutes. In 32 minutes in a mid-week victory over Keene State, Napi shot 50 percent from the floor overall and was 5-of-9 from three-point range for the second straight game. She did not commit a turnover in the game. In a loss to Rhode Island College Saturday, Nappi was 9-of-16 from the floor in 40 minutes. Nappi ranks second on the team this year with a 12.7 scoring average, leads the team with 24 three-point field goals and is shooting 70 percent from the foul line.
