NEWBA Passes Out Awards For February 13

Wehner Senior forward Jen Wehner has earned the  NEWBA/PrestoSports Player of the Week Award after leading the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts to a pair of MASCAC victories. Wehner racked up 25.0 points and 13.5 rebounds per game while knocking down 76.9% (20-26) of her shots from the field and 83.3% (10-12) of her free throws. The forward was at her best on Saturday, when she exploded for 29 points, 14 rebounds and five steals in her team's 80-67 triumph over Framingham State University. Wehner also record a double-double on 21 points and 13 rebounds in a thrilling 72-70 victory over Westfield State University on Tuesday.

Morrison First year center Kirsten Morrison has earned the NEWBA Rookie of the Week Award after recording 23.5 points and 14.5 rebounds per game for the University of Massachusetts Boston. Morrison converted 50.0% (18-36) of her shots from the floor and 68.8% (11-16) of her free throws. The center posted her first double-double of the week at the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday. In addition to recording 25 points, she also pulled down 13 rebounds and added three steals. Four days later, she tallied 22 points and 16 boards in her team's 75-69 triumph over Plymouth State University. This is the second time this season that Morrison has been named NEWBA Rookie of the Week.

  • Jil Vaughan, Colby College (Sr, F, Wareham, Mass.) - Vaughan piled up 17.0 points, 13.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocked shots per game in a perfect 3-0 week for the Mules. She recorded double-doubles in wins over Husson College, Connecticut College and Wesleyan University. The forward finished with 18 points and 15 boards in her team's 71-56 triumph over Conncticut College on Friday.  
  • Nicole Garland, University of Southern Maine (Sr, G, Portland, Maine) - Garland erupted for a career-best 26 points to lead the Huskies to a 72-68 triumph over Rhode Island College on Saturday. She knocked down four three-pointers in the contest and also converted all eight of her free throws. Rhode Island College entered the game with an undefeated record in Little East Conference play.
  • Taylor DeSanty, Colby-Sawyer College (Jr, G, North Adams, Mass.) - DeSanty had another monster week on the offensive end for the Chargers, scoring 27.0 points per game. She racked up 31 points and 10 rebounds in a heartbreaking 79-75 overtime loss against Husson College on Friday and scored 23 more in a 65-62 triumph over the Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday. 
  • Alexandria Lanieri, Roger Williams University (Jr, F, Port Jefferson, N.Y.) - Lanieri scored 22 points in wins over Nichols College and Connecticut College. Over the course of the week, she knocked down 57.1% (20-35) of her shots from the field and finished with a pair of double-doubles.
  • Jill Henrikson, Bowdoin College (Sr, G, Bath, Maine) - Henrikson averaged 21.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game in a perfect 2-0 week for the Polar Bears. She was at her best on Saturday, when she exploded for 26 points in a 73-60 triumph over Connecticut College. In the process, she became the 12th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.
