NEWBA Distributes Weekly Awards For February 21

Babson College junior forward Kathleen King has earned the NEWBA/PrestoSports Player of the Week award  for the week of February 14-20. Kathleen King King averaged a double-double on 29.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in a pair of league wins. The forward also tallied 10 assists and eight steals for the nationally ranked Beavers, who improved to 25-0 and finished off a perfect regular season. For the second straight year, they posted an 18-0 mark in league play. Including tournament games, they have racked up 43 straight wins against NEWMAC foes. King converted 55.0% (22-40) of her shots from the field and 82.4% (14-17) of her free throws. The forward exploded for a career best 36 points while also pulling down 15 boards in Babson's 79-48 victory over Clark University on Wednesday. She followed that up with 22 points and six rebounds in her team's 95-51 win at Mount Holyoke College on Saturday. King dished out five assists in both contests. The Beavers will be looking for their third straight NEWMAC Tournament Championship this coming weekend.

Mount Ida College first year forward Abigail Fedigan has been named NEWBA Rookie of the Week for the week of February 14-20. Abigail Fedigan Fedigan posted 13.3 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in a 2-1 week for the Mustangs. The forward was at her best on Thursday, when she recorded her first career double-double on 17 points and 14 boards in a thrilling 58-55 triumph over Rivier College. With the win, Mount Ida cemented its spot in the GNAC Tournament for the first time since joining the league four years ago. Two days earlier, Fedigan racked up 17 points and eight rebounds in a 65-51 win over Pine Manor College.

  • Melissa Teel, Western Connecticut State University (Sr, C, Hamden, Conn.) - Teel collected 21.0 points per game to boost Western Connecticut State University to a perfect 2-0 week. The center knocked down 75.0% (18-24) of her shots from the field and also chipped in with eight rebounds, eight blocked shots and five assists. She was nearly unstoppable in her team's 74-55 win over Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday, when she amassed 24 points on 11-of-13 shooting from the floor. Teel followed that up with an 18-point performance in a 63-48 victory over the University of Massachusetts Boston on Saturday. With the win, the Colonials clinched the LEC regular season title.
  • Courtney Cirillo, Keene State College (Jr, F, Windsor Locks, Conn.) - Cirillo averaged a double-double on 20.5 points and 12.0 rebounds per game in a 1-1 week for Keene State College. The forward was at her best on Tuesday, when she erupted for 24 points and 14 boards in a 63-47 victory over Plymouth State University. Four days later, she registered 17 points and 10 rebounds in a heartbreaking 57-53 overtime setback to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
  • Rachael Mack, Colby College (Jr, F, Augusta, Maine) - Mack racked up game highs of 26 points and 12 rebounds (7 offensive) in Colby College's 67-64 triumph over Middlebury College in the quarterfinal round of the NESCAC Tournament on Saturday. The forward scored five of the Mules' last nine points. She also tallied two assists, one blocked shot and one steal in the contest.
  • Stephanie Coro, Rhode Island College (Jr, G, Providence, R.I.) - Coro continued to fill up the scoring column with 24.0 points per game in a perfect 3-0 week for Rhode Island College. The guard knocked down 43.5% (27-62) of her shots from the floor, draining 11 shots from beyond the arc. She posted 22 points in just 18 minutes played in the Anchorwomen's 81-45 drubbing of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Tuesday. Two days later, she canned sxi three-pointers en route to 26 points in a 71-59 victory over Norwich University. Coro added 24 more points in an 81-51 win over Plymouth State University on Saturday.
  • Vanessa Powers, Castleton State College (Jr, F, Marshfield, Vt.) - Powers enjoyed another big week in Castleton State College's convincing wins over Johnson State College and Lyndon State College. The forward recorded 24.5 points and 9.5 rebounds while netting 69.7% (23-33) of her shots from the field. She notched a double-double on 17 points and 10 boards in the Spartans' 89-38 win over Johnson State on Tuesday. Three days later, she erupted for 32 points and nine rebounds in an 81-65 triumph over Lyndon State.
