NEWBA Unveils Award Winners for February 7

Colby College senior forward Jules Kowalski has earned the Jules Kowalski NEWBA/PrestoSports Player of the Week award for the week of January 31 - February 6. Kowalski averaged 14.7 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game in a perfect 3-0 week for the Mules. She converted 54.8% (17-31) of her shots from the field and 69.2% (9-13) of her free throw attempts. Kowalski posted her seventh double-double of the season on 15 points and 11 boards in her team's 85-71 triumph over nationally ranked Williams College on Saturday. Her seven assists in the contest were a career best, and she also came up with four steals. The forward scored 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting in Colby's 74-45 victory over the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday. Three days later, she went 6-for-8 from the floor en route to 13 points in an 81-60 win over Middlebury College. She also finished with five assists in the game.

Wentworth Institute of Technology first year forward Kendra Kerrhas been named NEWBA Rookie of  the Week for the week of January 31 - February 6. Kerr tallied 12.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals per outing in a 1-1 week for the Leopards. The forward was at her best on Thursday, when she recorded a double-double on 14 points and 12 rebounds against the University of New England. Two days later, she helped Wentworth to a 60-46 win over Anna Maria College with her 11 points, five boards, four assists and five steals. Over the course of the week, Kerr knocked down 52.3% (11-21) of her shots from the floor.

  • Erika Murphy, Elms College (Jr, F, Torrington, Conn.) - Murphy averaged 20.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game in a 1-1 week for Elms College. The forward made 55.9% (19-34) of her shots from the floor while also chipping in with four assists and four steals. She notched a double-double on 22 points and 11 boards in a 76-65 victory over Newbury College on Saturday. Two days earlier, she amassed 19 points and seven boards against Daniel Webster College.
  • Carrie Bunnell, University of New England (Sr, G, Barnet, Vt.) - Bunnell exploded for 22.5 points per game to boost the University of New England to a pair of league wins. The guard canned a career best six shots from beyond the arc en route to 22 points in a 62-50 triumph over the Wentworth Institute of Technology on Thursday. Two days later, she tallied 17 of her 23 points in the opening half of the Nor'easters 91-66 victory over Roger Williams University. She also dished out six assists in the contest.
  • Kathleen King, Babson College (Jr, F, Framingham, Mass.) - King helped nationally ranked Babson College remain unbeaten with her 22.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game this week. The forward drained 53.6% (15-28) of her shots from the field and 88.2% (15-17) of her free throw attempts in two games. After posting 22 points in her team's 72-38 win over MIT on Thursday, she amassed 23 points, 14 boards, three assists and and three steals in a 69-37 victory over WPI on Saturday.
  • Kelly Slattery, Springfield College (Jr, F, Somers, Conn.) - Slattery posted 19.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in leading Springfield College to a pair of conference wins. She made 57.7% (15-26) of her shots from the field and 80.0% (8-10) of her free throws. The forward piled up 22 points in her team's 67-51 triumph over WPI on Thursday. She followed that up with a 16-point performance in their 70-66 victory over Wheaton College on Saturday.
  • Kathy Andrade, Emerson College (Sr, F, Hull, Mass.) - Andrade averaged a double-double on 20.0 points and 13.5 rebounds per outing in a 1-1 week for Emerson College. She netted 56.7% (17-30) of her shots from the field and registered double-doubles in both games. After totaling 22 points and 14 boards in a 70-54 victory over Simmons College on Thursday, she delivered 18 points and 13 rebounds against Albertus Magnus College on Saturday.

  • Western Connecticut State University senior guard Karli Spera became the 16th player in program history to reach the 1,000 point on January 29, when she erupted for 21 in against the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
