Melissa Teel Western Connecticut State University senior center Melissa Teel has earned the NEWBA/PrestoSports Player of the Week award for the week of January 24-30. Teel exploded for 28.5 points, 15.5 rebounds and 6.5 blocked shots per game in a perfect 2-0 week for the Colonials. She converted 65.7% (23-35) of her shots from the field and 64.7% (11-17) of her free throw attempts. The reigning NEWBA Player of the Year was nearly unstoppable in Western Connecticut State's 58-50 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday. In addition to racking up 35 points and 15 rebounds, she recorded an eye popping 10 blocks. It was the first triple-double for a post player in program history. Teel was at it again in the Colonials' 67-40 win over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Saturday, when she registered a double-double on 22 points and 16 boards. In the process, she became Western Connecticut State's all-time leading rebounder, surpassing Tina Shanahan (1993-97). She will enter the final weeks of her collegiate career with 923 career caroms. |
Larla Brown Coast Guard Academy first year forward Larla Brown has been named NEWBA Rookie of the Week for the week of January 24-30. Brown recorded 17.0 points and 7.0 rebounds in two games for the Bears. She shot 36.1% )13-36) from the floor and canned a pair of three-pointers. Brown was at her best on Saturday, when she finished with 24 points on 10-of-25 shooting from the floor against Wheaton College. The forward pulled down five rebounds in the contest and also dished out three assists. Two days earlier, she collected 10 points and nine boards at MIT. |

Coaching Legend Tim Shea Announces Future Plans | ||||
Tim Shea announced that he will relinquish his head coaching duties at Salem State University at the conclusion of this season. Shea, who is also the Director of Athletics at the University, will continue to serve the department in that role. The Salem native has spent the last 30 seasons as the architect of one of the most successful women's basketball programs in the country. During Shea's reign at Salem State his teams have dominated the MASCAC, winning a combined 38 championships (22 regular season and 16 postseason titles). Shea, who entered the 2010-11 season as the third all-time winningest coach in NCAA Division III women's basketball history with an overall record of 646-157 (.787), guided the Vikings to a national championship in 1985-86. During that season, his team posted a 29-1 record and sat atop the national rankings throughout. Shea was cited by the NEWBA and WBCA with Regional and National Coach of the Year honors that season. No other NCAA Division III basketball team from New England has won a National Championship. In addition to his impressive record, his teams have earned a record 24 NCAA Division III national tournament invitations, including 14 in a row from 1993-2006. Shea has also claimed 23, 20-win seasons, third-best all-time. He has coached nine NCAA Division III All-Americans during his tenure. A point guard for Assumption College from 1968-1972, Shea earned an undergraduate degree in History as well as a master's degree in Education Administration from Salem State. The former four-year letterman broke into the coaching ranks as the girls' varsity coach at Salem High School from 1979-81. While there, he compiled an overall record of 70-3, which included a Division I State Championship and a perfect 27-0 record in 1980.
