Women's Basketball Uses Strong Second Half to Beat Husson 71-59

NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 5, 2013 – Colby-Sawyer College outscored Husson 47-35 in the second half en route to a 71-59 victory in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) women's basketball action Saturday afternoon. 

Colby-Sawyer improves to 8-4 overall and 6-0 in conference play. Husson drops to 1-8 overall and 1-4 in the NAC.

The Chargers raced out to a nine-point advantage, its biggest lead of the first half, seven minutes into the game. Husson slowly clawed their way back into the game and came within a bucket after a Stephanie Comstock (Bangor, Maine) free throw made it 16-14. The teams exchanged hoops down the stretch and the Eagles eventually tied the game before the end of the half at 24-24 on a jumper from Kelli Murray (Shawmut, Maine). 

Junior Ashley Fruzzetti (Raynham, Mass.) made a three-pointer in the opening moments of the second half to give Colby-Sawyer a 27-24 lead. Husson responded with a Chrissy Larrabee (Brooks, Maine) layup, but would not get any closer for the remainder of the game. The Chargers slowly pulled away thanks to 54% shooting in the frame. Colby-Sawyer began a 12-4 run with nine minutes to play to take its biggest lead of the game at 60-42. The home team held a comfortable double-digit lead for the rest of the half, eventually winning by 12.

Senior Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) flirted with a triple-double with nine points, nine rebounds and eight assists. She moved into second on Colby-Sawyer's all-time career assists list with 478 and also moved into 11th on the all-time scoring list with 1046 career points. Senior Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) led all players with 18 points. Sophomore Kelsey Cahill (Cumberland, R.I.) recorded a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Fruzzetti finished with 14 points and went 4-6 from beyond the arc. Junior Mari Meserve (Carver, Mass.) added a game-high 12 rebounds.

Comstock led Husson with 14 points. Murray finished with 13 points, five rebounds and a team best three assists. Freshman Amanda Johnson (Skowhegan, Maine) added 11 points and a game-high five steals off the bench. Freshman Victoria McIntyre (Mars Hill, Maine) chipped in seven points and seven rebounds.

Colby-Sawyer was aided by 44% shooting from beyond the arc (11-25), while the Eagles made just one trey. Husson controlled the paint and outscored Colby-Sawyer 34-16.

Colby-Sawyer travels to Green Mountain on Thursday for a 5:30 pm tip. Husson plays at Thomas on Tuesday with a 5:30 pm start.
