Bison drop first game of season at Curry, 63-50

MILTON, Mass. - Sophomore Alexis Wegrzynek (Wilbraham, Mass.) recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds for Nichols College, which dropped a 63-50 decision at Curry College Wednesday night in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball opener for both teams at the Student Center Gym.

Sophomore Sarah Whitestone (Dalton, Mass.) added 10 points for the Bison (2-1, 0-1 CCC), who suffered their first loss under first-year head coach Alice Mullen. Senior Hayley Zophin (Framingham, Mass.) notched eight points and nine boards before fouling out late in the second half for Nichols.

Sophomore Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) led the Colonels (4-1, 1-0 CCC) with 17 points - including four 3-point field goals - while classmate Samantha Corcoran (Hampton, N.H.) added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Curry shot 38 percent from the field and forced 24 turnovers as the Bison were held to 34 percent shooting. Nichols also struggled at the charity stripe, knocking down just eight of its 15 free throw attempts. 

The Colonels took their biggest lead of the opening period (11-5) with 13:37 on the clock after sophomore Christina Deiorio (Stoughton, Mass.) converted on a three-pointer. With 57 seconds remaining in the half, Nichols took a four-point edge (31-27) after senior Natalie Wilson (Bedford, N.H.) sank a jumper. Junior Ashley Assarian (Chicopee, Mass.) trimmed the Colonels' deficit to one (31-30) heading into the break, closing out the first-half scoring with a shot from beyond the arc.

With 12:54 remaining in regulation, Nichols senior Kristina Lindgren (Sturbridge, Mass.) sank a jumper to knot the game at 42-42. Curry's defense limited Nichols to eight points over the remainder of the game, while the offense generated 21 points en route to the 63-50 final.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, as the Colonels travel to Gordon for a 1 p.m. contest while Nichols hosts Western New England for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
