Women's Basketball Wins Sixth-Straight at Curry, 56-47

MILTON, Mass.--Emily Savino continued to move up the school's career scoring chart on Wednesday and the Western New England defense shut down Curry on the road as the Golden Bears prevailed 56-47 in Commonwealth Coast Conference women's basketball action at Colonels Student Center. Western New England won its sixth-consecutive game to improve to 14-8 overall and 11-4 in the CCC, while the Colonels fall to 9-13 on the season and 5-10 in the league.

Savino, a senior tri-captain, led all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-11 field goal shooting, including three 3-pointers. The point guard moved past Erin Marino (1327 from 1997-2001) for fifth place for WNE all-time points with 1,335. She also had four rebounds and three assists in 34 minutes of action against CC.

Kylie Beltz paced Curry with 17 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Samantha Corcoran posted a game-best 11 rebounds to go along with nine points.

The Golden Bears, who darted out to an 11-2 lead after 5 minutes eventually led 31-21 at the intermission. Western New England never trailed in the contest.

Senior Elena Radzikowski scored on a layup to open the scoring in the second half, matching Western New England's biggest lead of 12 points at 33-21. 

However, Carolyn Houston scored four of Curry's next six points to spark a 22-10 run over a span of 14 minutes and 24 seconds to tie it at 43-all.

But Savino drained a 3-pointer to put the Golden Bears ahead for good, ending the game on a 13-4 run of its own.

Freshman Chelsea Vujs added 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots for the Golden Bears. Senior tri-captain Shelby Van Huysen scored 10 points, and Radzikowski (9 points) matched Vujs for the team lead with seven rebounds.

Western New England held Curry to a .258 field goal percentage and prevented an opponent from scoring 50 points for the 10th time this season.
