Women's Basketball Defeats Lyndon, 71-46 in NAC Quarterfinals

BOX SCORE

NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 19, 2013 –  The Colby-Sawyer College women's basketball team defeated Lyndon, 71-46 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) quarterfinal contest Tuesday evening. The Chargers advance to the semifinals to play New England College.

The tournament's second seed, Colby-Sawyer(21-5), will meet third seed New England College in a semifinal matchup on Friday evening at 8:00 pm at Castleton. The Pilgrims advanced with a 55-50 win over Husson.

The NAC uses a final four format for its basketball championships, which means the highest remaining seed after the quarterfinals will host the semifinals and championship on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The top seed Spartans of Castleton won their game over Thomas and will host the tournament's remaining games.

Colby-Sawyer was led by junior Ashley Fruzzetti (Raynham, Mass.) who scored 12 points all via the three-point shot. Seniors Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) and Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) each scored 11 points. Bullett added a game-high 10 assists. Junior Mari Meserve (Carver, Mass.) chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench.

Sophomore forward Dannika Dobrowski (Plainfield, Vt.) led the Hornets with 12 points off the bench. She added eight rebounds. Senior Donna Lawson (Irasburg, Vt.) scored eight points, grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and added three blocks.

Lyndon jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, but the Chargers stormed back over the next four minutes with a 14-0 run capped by a Fruzzetti trey. The Colby-Sawyer advantage hovered around six points through the midway point of the half, but it would balloon to 14 after a 12-5 run capped by a Meserve layup gave the Chargers a 38-24 lead at the break.

Colby-Sawyer controlled the pace in the second half and did not let Lyndon get closer than 15 points. The largest lead of the game came at the 6:29 mark when sophomore Kelsey Bragdon (Wells, Maine) connected on a jumper to give Colby-Sawyer a 65-35 edge.

Colby-Sawyer outrebounded the Hornets 46-30, but could only muster six second chance points.
