Women's Basketball Sinks Maine Maritime 51-35

NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 4, 2013 – Senior Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) scored a game-high 21 points to help lift Colby-Sawyer to a 51-35 victory over Maine Maritime in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) women's basketball contest. 

Colby-Sawyer improves to 7-4 overall and 5-0 in NAC play. The Mariners dip to 4-5 overall and pull even at 2-2 in the conference. 

The Mariners jumped out to its largest lead of the first half, 14-8, on a bucket by sophomore Rebekah Campbell (Corinth, Maine). Colby-Sawyer finished the half on a 15-2 run, holding the visitors to one made field goal over the last 12 minutes of play.

Colby-Sawyer held a comfortable advantage over the first several minutes of the second half, before Maine Maritime stormed back to cut the deficit to four on a three-pointer by senior Casey Everest (Portland, Maine). A jumper by Taylor DeSanty with 7:57 left in the game, gave Colby-Sawyer a 38-30 lead. The Chargers defense was tough once again and did not let the visitors get closer than eight points, holding the Mariners to two field goals for the remainder of the frame.

DeSanty scored 14 of her 21 points in the second half. She added seven rebounds and a game best five steals. Senior Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) contributed eight rebounds, six assists and five points. Sophomore Kelsey Cahill (Cumberland, R.I.) corralled a team-high nine boards. Junior Mari Meserve (Carver, Mass.) collected six points, five rebounds and a career-high four blocks.

The Mariners were led by senior Casey Everest (Portland, Maine). She scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds. Sophomore Rebekah Campbell (Corinth, Maine) tallied six points, six rebounds and a game best six blocks. Freshman Mary Badeen (Newport, Maine) added seven points and six rebounds.

The Chargers remain unbeaten when holding the opponent under 30% shooting.

Colby-Sawyer hosts Husson tomorrow at 1:00 pm, while Maine Maritime travels down I-89 to play at New England College at 1:00 pm.
