Bison end season with 76-63 win at Gordon

Box Score

WENHAM, Mass. - Senior Hayley Zophin (Framingham, Mass.) closed out her career with her 16th double-double of the season to lead the Nichols College women's basketball team to a 76-63 win at Gordon College Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action.

Zophin - who entered the contest No. 8 in the nation in rebounding at 13.0 rpg - recorded a career-high 27 points and snared 11 boards as the Bison (7-18, 4-14 CCC) snapped an eight-game losing skid and swept the season series from the Fighting Scots (3-22, 1-17 CCC).

Senior Kristina Lindgren (Sturbridge, Mass.) scored a season-high 14 points in her final game in black & white while junior Kasey Pelletier (Dunstable, Mass.) also netted 14 points to go along with four assists. Senior Natalie Wilson (Ned Bedford, N.H.) finished with eight points and seven rebounds in her final collegiate contest as well.

Nichols shot 40 percent from the field and 78 percent from the free throw line.

Gordon's effort was led by junior forward Lauren Kranyak (Locust Grove, Va.) with 27 points, 14 rebounds, and four assists and sophomore forward Brooke Kratche (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) with 17 points and nine rebounds. Junior guard Skylar Bareford (Stonington, Conn.) added 12 points in the outing.

The Scots took an early 9-2 lead and maintained their advantage for the remainder of the first half, stretching their lead to as many as seven before heading into the locker room with a one-point edge (25-24).

Nichols opened the second half by overtaking the Scots lead off a pair of free throws from Zophin at 19:46. Kranyak responded at the other end with a jumper in the paint from Kratche to take back the advantage, to which Nichols' Lindgren answered with a three to once again tip the scales. Kratche and Kranyak then combined for the next 10 points to give Gordon an eight-point lead (37-29) at 15:11. The Scots held steady to that lead until the 8:31 mark when Kratche fouled out, opening a window for Nichols to go on a 19-2 run to establish a healthy deficit Gordon was unable to overcome.
