Women's Basketball Sails Past New England College 67-44

NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 29, 2013 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team remained unbeaten in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play after defeating New England College 67-44 on Tuesday evening.  

Colby-Sawyer runs its win streak to 12 games, improving to 15-4 overall and 12-0 in the NAC. The Pilgrims fall to 14-5 overall and 9-3 in conference play.

Senior Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) led Colby-Sawyer with 18 points. Senior Sammi Lehr (Cohasset, Mass.) had 11 points and eight rebounds in the win. Senior Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) also reached double-figures with 10 points. She added six rebounds and a game-high five assists.

New England College was led by an 18-point performance from senior Kate Levy (Falmouth, Mass.). Sophomore Taylor Burgess (Randallstown, Md.) scored nine points and brought down a game-high 12 rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench.

Colby-Sawyer raced out to a 21-6 lead in the first seven minutes, including nine points from DeSanty. The Chargers mustered just one field goal over the next four minutes, but held the visitors to six points in that stretch to keep a 23-12 edge. New England College made just one basket in the remaining nine minutes, which allowed the Chargers to pull away with an eventual 22-point halftime advantage, 39-17. DeSanty led all players with 13 first half points. The Pilgrims, who outrebounded the home team 22-18, shot just 23.3% from the floor and 1-10 from beyond the arc in the first frame.

Both teams struggled from the floor in the second half with under 24% shooting for each side. The Chargers were able to keep a comfortable lead throughout due to making 14 of 16 free throw attempts. Colby-Sawyer held its largest advantage of 28 points after a pair of DeSanty free throws made the game 48-20.

New England College won the battle of the boards 52-43, but was outscored 34-18 in the paint. Colby-Sawyer, who is fourth in the nation in field goal percentage defense, held the Pilgrims to 23.2% from the floor.

Colby-Sawyer will host the University of Maine-Farmington on Friday at 7:30 pm, while the Pilgrims host Thomas at 7:30 pm on Friday.
