Salve Regina began the second half trailing by three (26-23) and eventually by six before rallying for a 63-51 victory over University of New England.

NEWPORT, R.I. - Trailing by six in the second half, Salve Regina University women's basketball went on a 13-2 run to take control of the game and defeat University of New England, 63-51, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Rodgers Recreation Center.

Salve Regina (11-7; 8-3 CCC) saw its point guard, junior Kaitlyn Birrell (Scituate, R.I.), pick up her third and fourth personal fouls at 15:46 and 15:07, respectively, of the second half, shortly after Nor'easter senior Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine) sank a 3-pointer for a 34-28 advantage for the visitors. Enter reserve guard Lisa Bucci (Irvington, N.J.) and the Seahawks then enjoyed a 13-2 run over a 3:39 stretch.

While the sophomore guard had a clutch 3-pointer during the run, senior center Lindsay Shorey (Ashland, Mass.) dominated the run with four field goals. The Nor'easters went 6:23 between field goals, Paradis' 3-pointer at 15:34 and then a Margo Russell (Madison, Maine) jumper at 9:11, with only five free throws during that period.

After Russell's jumper pulled University of New England (14-4; 9-2 CCC) within three (44-41), Birrell returned to sink a 3-pointer during an 11-2 run. Just before her trey, she assisted on a fastbreak layup for sophomore Marissa Pendergast (Medfield, Mass.) after freshman Brianna DelValle (Belchertown, Mass.) ripped down one of her game-high 11 rebounds.

After a Shorey layup at 3:09 gave Salve Regina its largest lead (55-43), UNE had a quick 8-3 run in 42 seconds. Paradis and Kari Pelletier (South Paris, Maine) both had 3-pointers and Kelly Coleman (Portland, Conn.) sank a jumper for a 58-51 score.

The Seahawks made five of six free throws in the final minute to finish the scoring. Paradis topped UNE with 13 points but the Nor'easters were held to 23% shooting from the floor. Paradis and Beth Suggs (Bath, Maine) both had nine rebounds.

Shorey scored 16 of her game-high 22 points in the second half. Pendergast finished with 11 points while a pair of freshmen led the Seahawks on the glass - DelValle with 11 rebounds and Laura Anne Dinan (Monterey, Mass.) with 10 boards.

Salve Regina splits its season series with University of New England. The two teams met in the conference championship game last February with the top-seeded Seahawks winning 76-74. UNE won by 12 in the first meeting this season in December (68-56 in Biddeford, Maine).

Salve Regina hosts Western New England on Tuesday before a three-game road trip. The Nor'easters travel to Curry College on Tuesday in the middle of their three-game road trip.
