Shorey double-double does the job for Seahawks

NEWPORT, R.I. - Senior center Lindsay Shorey (Ashland, Mass.) scored 15 of her game-high 20 points in the second half to lead Salve Regina University women's basketball to a 63-42 win over visiting Gordon College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action in Newport.

Salve Regina (15-8; 12-4 CCC) wins for the 10th straight time in its all-time series with Gordon (7-16; 2-14 CCC).

The Seahawks went to sophomore forward Marissa Pendergast (Medfield, Mass.) on their opening possession to claim an early 2-0 lead. The Fighting Scots had their own sophomore forward give them a 3-2 lead when Skylar Bareford (Stonington, Conn.) sank a 3-pointer on their opening possession.

Brooke Kratche (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) made it a 5-2 score before Salve Regina went on a 13-2 run over four and a half minutes. Shorey and Laura Anne Dinan (Monterey, Mass.) had two baskets apiece during the run. Kaitlyn Birrell (Scituate, R.I.) and Brianna DelValle (Belchertown, Mass.) had a jumper and layup, respectively.

Birrell was more busy stealing and distributing the ball in the first half, tallying six swipes and eight assists by the break.

Gordon freshman guard Aly Towle (Rochester, N.Y.) had two baskets during a 9-4 spurt by the Scots to get within three points (19-16; 6:53 remaining in the first), but Salve Regina closed the half with a 16-8 run including a 3-pointer from three different players - Cortney Rosenlund (Whitinsville, Mass.), Sarah Averill (Newfields, N.H.), and Lisa Bucci (Irvington, N.Y.).

The Seahawks put the game out of reach 12 minutes into the second half with a 22-9 run to open the period. Shorey, who was honored before the game along with fellow senior co-captain Kira Murphy (New Boston, N.H.), made 7-of-9 field goals in the 12-minute span. Rosenlund had two more baskets for a season-best nine-point effort.

Birrell finished with 10 assists, her third game this season with double-figure assists. Shorey had 11 rebounds while Pendergast had 11 points as Salve Regina remained in a tie for second place in the league with Endicott College. The Gulls face league-leading University of New England on Tuesday.

Salve Regina entertains Nichols College on Valentine's Day. Anyone wearing red will be admitted free to the 6 p.m. contest.

Leanna Tallamy (Wantage, N.J.) led Gordon with a double-double effort, 15 points and 10 rebounds. Kratche also had 10 boards for the Scots who play their final regular season home game against Wentworth on Tuesday.
