NEWBA Announces Weekly Awards for December 11

Senior guard Georgia Bourikas of Suffolk University is the Presto Sports NEWBA Player of the Week for games played from December 4-December 10. Bourikas averaged 29.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in a 2-0 week for Suffolk, as the Rams extended their winning streak to five games. The senior scored 30 points, 26 of which came in the second half, on a 61.6 field goal percentage (11-18) to help Suffolk rally for a 69-61 win at Fitchburg State on Thursday. She also grabbed 11 rebounds against the Falcons. Bourikas followed that performance up with a 28-point, eight-rebound, five-assist effort on Saturday as the Rams defeated Framingham State in overtime, 90-87.

Southern Maine
Freshman • Guard • Gorham, Maine

Freshman guard Kristen Curley of Southern Maine earns NEWBA Rookie of the Week honors after leading the Huskies to a 2-0 week with a pair of road victories. Over the two contests, Curley averaged 14.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.5 steals, 1.0 blocks and 1.0 assists per game while shooting 52.4 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from three-point range. In a 66-52 win at Salem State on Tuesday, Curley had 17 points, nine rebounds, four steals, two blocked shots and one assist while shooting 46.7 percent (7-for-15) from the field. In Saturday's 56-40 triumph at Keene State, she scored nine of her 11 points and grabbed five of her seven rebounds in the second half to help the Huskies overtake the Owls.

  • Nakira Examond, UMass Dartmouth (Jr., F, New Bedford, Mass.) - In her only game of the week, Examond set a UMass Dartmouth single-game record with 41 points on 18-of-27 shooting from the field and 5-of-8 from the free throw line in a 95-65 win over Western Connecticut on Saturday. Examond also recorded 13 rebounds and two assists in 31 minutes of action. 
  • Alayne Felix, Maine Maritime (Jr., F, Mahopac, N.Y.) - Felix averaged a double-double with 20 points, ten rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game in a 1-1 week for the Mariners. In Maine Maritime's 65-57 loss to Castleton, Felix scored a game-high 20 points and also added six rebounds, and two steals. In the team's 71-34 win over Green Mountain, she led all players once again with a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds, and also added five assists and two steals. She shot 55.6 percent from the field and 90.9 percent from the free throw line for the week. 
  • Emily Irwin, Curry (Jr., G, Billerica, Mass.) - In a 2-0 week for Curry, Irwin averaged a double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds to go with 4.5 assists and 8.0 steals per game while playing all but one minute. She registered 24 points, seven rebounds and seven steals in a victory over conference opponent Gordon on Tuesday. Irwin then closed the week with a near-triple-double of 28 points, 15 rebounds and nine steals against Fitchburg State on Saturday. 
  • Valerie Martin, Mount Ida (So., F, Derry, N.H.) - Martin led the Mustangs to a 2-0 week, averaging 23 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and 3.5 assists per game. She produced a career-high 28 points, 15 boards, four assists and school record-tying 13-of-13 effort at the foul line in a 94-80 victory over Fitchburg State on Tuesday. Martin added 18 points, nine rebounds and six steals in a 78-54 triumph over Mount Holyoke on Saturday.  She shot 62 percent (16-26) from the field for the week as Mount Ida continued its best start (6-2) in the program's 19-year NCAA varsity history.
  • Hannah Nicholson, Brandeis (So., F, Sunderland, Vt.) - Nicholson led the Judges to a 2-0 week with wins over Babson and Gordon by averaging 18 points and 9 rebounds per game on 80 percent shooting from the field and 88 percent from the free throw line. Brandeis snapped a five-game losing streak in the series against the Beavers with a wire-to-wire 69-56 win last Monday as Nicholson led all players with 18 points and nine rebounds on a nearly perfect shooting night (4-4 FG, 1-1 3FG, 9-10 FT). Against Gordon, Nicholson totaled 13 points and three boards in the 74-45 victory for the Judges. 
  • Catherine Sweeney, Worcester State (So., G, Lowell, Mass.) - Sweeney turned in double-double averages of 11.5 rebounds and 10 assists with 8.5 points per game in a 1-1 week for Worcester State. She finished one assist shy of a triple-double in the Lancers' 73-48 win over Nichols on Thursday, as she recorded 13 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and six steals, while shooting 50% from the field. In a 56-45 setback to Springfield on Saturday, she registered her second double-double of the week with 12 rebounds and 11 assists to go with four points, two blocks and one steal.
