NEWBA Hands Out Weekly Awards for January 30

Jordan Junior forward Haley Jordan has earned the  NEWBA/PrestoSports Player of the Week Award after leading the University of Southern Maine to a pair of Little East Conference wins. Jordan racked up 24.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game while knocking down 55.3% (21-38) of her shots from the field. The forward was at her best on Tuesday, when she piled up 25 points and a career-best 16 rebounds in her team's 86-53 victory over Plymouth State University. She followed up her third double-double of the year with 23 more points in a 69-56 triumph over Western Connecticut State University on Saturday. This is the second time this year that Jordan has earned Player of the Week honors.

 Carter Rachael Carter has earned the NEWBA Rookie of the Week Award after racking up 22.7 points and 8.0 rebounds per game for Salem State University. Carter knocked down 51.1% (23-45) of her shots from the field and 73.7% (14-19) of her free throws. The guard was nearly ubstoppable in her team's thrilling 62-61 triumph over Worcester State University on Tuesday. In addition to recording a double-double on 26 points and 11 rebounds, she also dished out six assists and collected nine steals. She drained three shots from beyond the arc and converted all seven of her shots from the charity stripe. Two days later, Carter scored 18 points in a 85-72 loss at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. She followed that up with her second double-double of the week in a 74-67 setback against Westfield State University on Saturday. This time, she finished with 24 points and 10 boards.

  • Kathleen King, Babson College (Sr, F, Framingham, Mass.) - King averaged a double-double on 18.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game to lead the nationally-ranked Beavers to a pair of NEWMAC wins. She pulled down eight boards in an 82-52 victory over WPI on Wednesday. In the process, she became just the third player in program history to reach 1,000 for her career. 
  • Rachel Riley, Rhode Island College (Sr, F, Coventry, R.I.) - Riley guided the Anchorwomen to a perfect 3-0 week with her outstanding all-around play. In addition to collecting 16.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per outing, she also chipped in with eight assists. The forward posted 19 points and eight boards in a thrilling 56-54 triumph over Western Connecticut State University on Tuesday.
  • Cailin Bullett, Colby-Sawyer College (Jr, G, Millbury, Mass.) - Bullett did a little bit of everything in a perfect 2-0 week for the Chargers. The guard averaged 18.0 points, 9.5 assists, 6.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals in wins over Lyndon State College and Johnson State College. She just missed a triple-double on Thursday against Lyndon State, when she totaled 16 points, nine assists and nine boards.
  • Emily Savino, Western New England University (Jr, G, Ellington, Conn.) - Savino guided the Golden Bears to a pair of Commonwealth Coast Conference victories with her 22.5 points per game. After scoring 19 in a 70-48 win over Gordon College on Wednesday, she exploded for 26 points and seven rebounds in a 65-45 victory Over Nichols College on Saturday. 
  • Denisha Parks, Elms College (Fy, F, Fall River, Mass.) - Parks continued to shine for the Blazers, averaging 22.5 points and 13.5 rebounds per game in wins over Southern Vermont College and Lesley University. She was at her best on Saturday, when she erupted for 34 points and 14 boards in a 65-27 victory over the Lynx. Over the course of the week, the forward shot 59.3% (16-27) from the field.

Milestones
  • Colby-Sawyer College junior guard Taylor DeSanty became the 11th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points on Saturday against Johnson State College.
  • Bridgewater State University senior forward Shelly DePina reached the 1,000-point milestone on Wednesday against the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. She became the 14th player in school history to do so.
